I played the Sunflower Bar last night and it went well but on many different levels. Some, quite unexpected.
Just before 9.00 pm. we were all set up. Upstairs at the Sunflower while downstairs John McSherry and the boys were getting stuck in with a regular piping session. Great stuff. Amazing musicianship as ever.
I was ready with a single chair on the stage. Two guitars, a hand drum, one mic and a wee music stand for the odd wee poem.
The tables and chairs waited expectantly. Gerry Jones on sound and my wife Ann, ready at the door for tickets. The show was due to start at 9.00. But no sign . . .
Then at a few minutes past 9.00 pm. we heard steps on the stairs and in came our audience, Jack and Heather, all the way from East Belfast. They had come across my songs at Lindores Café, Acoustic Sessions, run by Ronnie Purvis (Acoustic Showcase NI.)
The upstairs bar seats about forty.
I started about ten past and finished at 10.45. A mixture of songs, a few poems and lots of chat. Even a true story about rescuing a mouse from Lidyl in Carricfergus. (It’s still a great wee shop). We all had a good time and even the chairs and tables seemed to glow more by the end of the show.
Audience figures was identified as “an issue” but an audience of two is all it took to fire up my wee spark plugs and not give in to circumstances.
More anon . . . I’ll just crack on.
