DUCK SHOOTING by Donal Kennedy

An unfounded rumour or story may be described, in polite society, as a “canard”  to avoid calling its narrator a liar and risking litigation or the inconvenience, for late sleepers, of Pistols for Two at Dawn. You’ll of course know that the term literally means “Duck” a bird famously flavoured with orange sauce.

I hope to go on a duck shoot, exposing unfounded rumours and stories and those that spread them, and readers are welcome to join in the fun. Some of you may, like the Bould Shelmalier in P.J.McCall’s ballad of ’98, have long-barrelled guns of the sea, also known as Punt Guns. While slaughtering the ducks you should be mindful of the risk of collateral damage, like giving some low, lying Punts, a good ducking. How you use the opportunity is up to you.
I’ve exposed the “canard” about the Second World War being called “The Emergency” and it would be no harm if all those who repeat are given a good
roasting.
