What a harvest the Grim Reaper has gathered over the Christmas! Entertainers and celebrities, many with only a few miles on the clock compared with myself who celebrated a glorious 75th Birthday with my nearest and dearest yesterday, garlanded with gifts.
I’m still recovering from a nasty head cold I caught on a trip to Norfolk a couple of weeks ago which interrupted my usual social gallop and I had misgivings about the celebrations but binned my “bah humbug” hat to go out on the town and had the time of my life.
One of my presents was a framed photograph of myself and my lady wife, taken by her sister, on our 45th wedding anniversary last August. At the time, though I was completely unworried by a symptom which prompted my wife to insist I go to my GP, she suspected it indicated cancer. The GP confirmed I was right to see him and I had exhaustive tests which indicated a condition amenable to medication but was not cancer- related nor at all serious. My sister-in-law was the only person who knew of my wife’s worry and shared it.
The picture shows me in the rude health I (rightly) believed to be enjoying. With God’s help and the support of my nearest and dearest I hope to enjoy many more rude years before popping my clogs.
