THE IRISH TIMES CHAMPIONED HITLER by Donal Kennedy

On Hitler’s accession to power THE IRISH TIMES, in an Editorial, “Herr Hitler’s Way”

welcomed him, particularly for his rough treatment of Communists, on the principle

that “you can’t make an omelette without breaking an egg.” It actually cited that

expression.

A few weeks earlier it had warned of the dire consequences of voting for Fianna

Fail, which had been in power for a year with Labour support. Fianna Fail remained

In power for the following fifteen years, interrupted by elections which it kept winning.

During those years industrial employment and housebuilding boomed, workers were

guaranteed paid holidays, a republican liberal-democratic constitution was established

by the people, Cork Harbour, Bantry Bay and Lough Swilly were cleared of British Forces

and Ireland was saved the horrors of the Second World War.

The Irish Times never forgave de Valera for that.

Nor do they remind readers of their approval of Hitler’s omelettes.
