Former Irish ambassador Ray Bassett is probably unique among contemporary Irish commentators: he thinks that the south of Ireland missed an opportunity to stand by the UK during the Brexit negotiations. That was just one of the topics we touched on during our Zoom chat yesterday evening. What I find fascinating about Ray are three things: despite his distinguished career he is totally unassuming, he argues his point of view from an informed position, and he has a sense humour. Three qualities you don’t often meet in a public figure. Oh, and a fourth and maybe most important quality: he has the courage to swim against the tide. I don’t have to agree with him to say “Maith thú, Ray!”
Here’s the interview. Bain sult as – Enjoy.
