I feel good

Remember Cat Stevens singing this?

‘Morning has broken like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken like the first bird
Praise for the singing
Praise for the morning
Praise for them springing fresh from the Word’

I know I shouldn’t feel so happy but I do.

I know Joe Biden isn’t perfect. He probably wouldn’t even make my top five list of Democratic contenders for the 2020 presidency. But I’m happy it wound up being him.

I know he was opposed to bussing as a way to promote racial integration back in the 1970s.

I know that he voted in 1993 against admitting homosexuals to the American armed forces.

I know that in 1996, he was opposed to same-sex marriage.

I know that in August 1988 he made a speech that plagiarised a very similar speech by Neil Kinnock (yes, seriously, Virginia).

I know that while in law school he submitted as his own a paper that was really a rip-off of a law journal article.

I know that he had not one but two brain operations.

I know that his questioning of Clarence Thomas for appointment to the Supreme Court was so confused, Thomas referred to his questions as “bean-balls”.

I know he met with Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic and claims he told him “I think you’re a damn war criminal and you should be tried as one”.

I know all this and more, but I still feel as if a giant clammy honking toad has been lifted off my shoulders. I want to sing and dance and prance about yelling “How does it feel?” to the racist, misogynistic, lying bully who figures any votes against him were illegal.

Morning has broken.  I feel good.
