Fr Tony Flannery, a priest in the Redemptorist Community in Ireland, has been silenced by the Vatican since January 2013. Fr Tony was ordained in 1974 and is a conscientious priest who works hard to spread the Good News. In 2012 he first heard from his Superior that the Vatican Congregation for Doctrine and Faith (CDF) was unhappy with his articles in the religious magazine called Reality. When he refused to sign certain papers sent by the CDF, he was suspended from all priestly ministry. He wanted to discuss the matter with those who found fault but they refused to meet him.
Fr Flannery has suffered at the hands of right-wing extremists in the Catholic Church and specifically in the Vatican’s Congregation for Faith & Doctrine because of his sincerely held views about the need for reform in the Church he loves -specifically the ordination of women priests and a change in the rule of compulsory celibacy for the Catholic priesthood.
I have written to Pope Francis asking him to reinstate Fr Flannery immediately without preconditions and to make it known that he is a priest in good standing,
In my opinion Fr Tony Flannery is a prophetic priest who speaks the truth out of a radical faith in Jesus Christ. He has received disgraceful treatment from the Vatican.
This is a copy of the the letter I sent to the Pope:
Dear Pope Francis,
Fr Tony Flannery is a priest in the Redemptorist Order in Ireland who has been silenced by the Vatican. Fr Tony has been a dedicated priest for almost 50 years. He is suffering at the hands of extremists in the Catholic Church and specifically in the Vatican’s Congregation for Faith & Doctrine because of his sincerely held views about the need for reform in the Church that he loves. His treatment by the Vatican is disgraceful. While he challenges laws and practices within the Church nothing he has said or written is heretical.
Fr Tony Flannery is a prophetic voice who speaks the truth out of a radical faith in Jesus Christ. He is admired by many who treasure authentic voices of hope at this present time.
I am writing to ask you to reinstate Fr Flannery without preconditions and make it known that he is a priest in good standing.
With every good wish and blessing,
