The Irish Times has several interesting and linked features this morning. The most eye-catching, I thought, was that relating to Sinn Féin TD Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire. He looks about 21 years of age but is probably in his thirties, and is the SF education guy. It seems there was, um, a misunderstanding between RTÉ’s Liveline and the TD which has been settled out of court. Young Donnchadh, The Irish Times believes, is now more than €150,000 wealthier. The newspaper fights shy of telling us what was said on Joe Duffy’s Liveline, but it occurred in the course of a discussion of a “fantasy cabinet” (this was after the general election in the south but before a government was formed). Young Donnchadh topped the poll in a constituency including Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney and Minister for Public Expediture Michael McGrath.
The fact that RTÉ settled out of court for such a trouser-stretching sum strongly suggests they realised they hadn’t a legal leg to stand on. I’d add that it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy than Joe Duffy, only in fact it’s the public who will have to cough up the money, not the garrulous Mr Duffy.
