A British General on capturing an Indian city is reputed to have sent a simple telegram – “Peccavi” which was decoded a “I Have Synd.” It was a joke which will have been appreciated by most of my Irish and billions of other Christians who attended Sunday Mass.
Anyway,I confess that I have erred – sins of omission mostly in my BLOGS. Recently I said Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson was shot in July 1922 whereas he was shot in June of that year.
More recently you may have seen the Headline “ALL THE NEWS THAT’S- ……” and wondered what the Devil it had to do with SYNONYMS.
My first draft had been headed “TRIPE, TREASON, THE IRISH TIMES” and i argued that TRIPE, TREASON and THE IRISH TIMES were not only inseparable but the same in their essence, and therefore SYNONYMOUS.
Incidentally in another recent Blog I recorded the role played by LORD GOODMAN in setting up the IRISH TIMES TRUST.
As a reader of Private Eye over many decades I read of how the Noble Lord would issue writs against publications at the drop of a hint about his and his cronies’ misdoings.
GOODMAN WAS NOT A PILLAR OF SUPPORT OF FREE PRESS AND OTHER MEDIA IN EITHER BRITAIN OR IRELAND.
