Subject: Gerry Adams, the Courts, media. the IRA & others.
Sir,
In the over forty years Gerry Adams has been involved in public life, All the Queen’s Horses and All the Queen’s Men have been unable to convince even a non-jury Court that he was, or ever has been, a member of the IRA..
As he denies ever having been a member I think prudent commentators, whatever their suspicions, should give him the benefit of the doubt.
Garret Fitzgerald in his memoirs recalls that he sat for years in the Seanad on the Fine Gael benches without joining that party but decided to make good the omission when he wished to stand for the Dail.
He consulted the Elder Statesman John A Costello about the procedure. “Been in politics forty years, twice Taoiseach, never joined Fine Gael” was Costello’s answer.
The electorate of West Belfast and the electorate of Louth were not buying a pig in a poke when they elected Adams .He has repeatedly praised the IRA and marched shoulder to shoulder with them.
It is difficult to believe that those who repeatedly elected Costello were unaware of the praise he lavished on Italy’s Blackshirts and Germany’s “Hitler Shirts” (sic) in Dail Eireann in 1934 when he forecast that the Blueshirts would come to power in Ireland. There is no excuse for an educated electorate today to be ignorant of the philosophical roots of the parties that canvass their support.
Nor should they be spared the information that the accession to power of Adolf Hitler in March 1933 was welcomed by a leading article in Ireland’s Paper of Record
