Should it be against the law to assist someone in dying? What about if they’re in terrible pain? And if a heart-broken partner, perfectly healthy, wants to go with them, should you assist that?
If you favour a united Ireland, do you secretly delight in the fact that NEI is something of a basket case? Or should we work for a healthy, wealthy NEI and show we are responsible citizens who’d be an asset to a new Ireland?
Opinion polls about a united Ireland – do they make sense, given that nobody really has investigated what a united Ireland might look like? Are we being truly stupid and keen to do what was done with Brexit?
Finally, is it true that if you’re an academic, and you write or speak critically of Israel, your career is over? And wasn’t there something of that during the Troubles, where there were few people who’d speak out for an abolition of the border?
So much to think of, and it’s only Monday. And what’s more, Pat has a heavy head-cold. Be gentle with him….
Lads. in Sydney a few weeks ago, three members of a cast in a play wore the keffeyih for the encore clapping (not during the play) …. And all hell broke loose. Where are all those right wing culture warriors who love to loudly shout about freedom of speech?
About a “United Ireland” – I remember a few years ago Bertie Ahern saying that for the process to start there must be no violence at all between the two communities. Such a silly comment – gives the green light to those opposed to a UI to threaten violence and the issue will go away, and provide a convenient get out clause to fearful and weak politics. An UI should be debated on its merits and not be shelved because people are fearful of what may or might happen.
