I’ve been browsing through “DRAWING CONCLUSIONS” A Cartoon History
of Anglo-Irish Relations 1798-1998.
Anti-Irish cartoonists portrayed us as apes, and Frankenstein Monsters
throughout the two centuries covered. I can recall Lord Hailsham referring
to Republicans as “Baboons”. Perhaps he was trying to compensate for the
misfortune of his own porcine, surname “HOGG” and forgiven on that score?
Besides, my Catholic teachers explained that Invincible Ignorance insures its possessors against the fires of Hell.
Irish cartoonists depicted horrors inflicted on our people by Britishers, who
were consistently portrayed as men like the rest of us, never as brute beasts.
The terminology of the Ukranian Regime towards speakers of Russian and of
adherents of the Russian Orthodox Church mimics that of the British Cartoonists
and that of all racist tyrants and bigots. It was the terminology used by the Genocidal regime which murdered Jews, Roma and others in the 1940s.
It was about a week old when the decision was made in Berlin by that regime, chaired by a man with close connections with Scotland Yard.
The same de-humanising terminology is used today by those attempting the Final Solution of The Palestine Problem.
SHAME ON THEM!
OOPS AGAIN!
In early January 1942 when I was about a weeek old
REINHARD HEYDRICH chaired a meeting in Wansee, near Berlin which determined to murder
all the Jews in Europe.
A few days before Britain declared war on Germany in September 1939, a very senior Scotland Yard
Officer, wrote or wired his friend, Heydrich regretting that he would be unable (for the present) to keep
his appointment with him to be shown around Germany’s state-of-the- art Correctional Facilities at
Dachau.
Heydrich came to a sticky end. Assasinated on Churchill’s orders,
The result was the destruction of Lidice.
Like the assassination of Field Martial Sir Henry Wilson in 1922 it did more harm than good.
Anti Irish jokes were on prime time TV during the conflict, anti Irish tropes littered British “comedies” but they dried up once the Good Friday Agreement came along, in fact, we became trendy and popular. Funny that. If the “troubles” were to kick off again we would find ourselves being insulted again. Mind you, the British media are not so daft as to insult Islam, fair play to the Muslims.
We have the “Arab” phrase “Infidels”to denigrate unbelievers. And we have the phrase “Chosen Ones” to separate themselves from the rest (whoever they may be ). Two phrases to cause hundreds of years of bile and hatred .Yasser Arafat condensed his version once when he said “We have the Olive Branch (for peace) and we have the Gun to protect it “. While I was looking for some nice wool carpets from the middle east I found on e bay a few carpets with images of Tanks , Helicopters with Machine Guns etc.All absorbing war as a cultural element .Palm Trees and Camels had been left in the past .
