It’s not often that I agree with Micheál Martin, but I do so wholeheartedly when he speaks of “the ordinary people of Gaza who are living hell on Earth at the moment”.
The Tánaiste was speaking from Brussels. The south of Ireland and Spain have sent a joint letter calling on the EU Commission to review as a matter of urgency their trade agreement to see whether Israel was in breach of its human rights clauses.
I’m afraid it’s at this point that I begin throwing things and swearing horribly. Spain and Ireland are asking the EU “to review” and to see IF Israel is in breach of the trade deal’s human rights clauses.
Of course it’s in bloody breach of human rights. And if human rights are part of the deal, then the deal should have been called off months ago. As it is, the Czech Republic and Hungary are preventing sanctions on Israel by the EU. Even the UK and the US have imposed sanctions. But the Czechs and the Hungarians are refusing to allow the EU to follow suit.
One good thing the nightmare of Gaza has brought is that any sane, half-moral person will never again believe the guff that the EU, the UK and the US are the champions of freedom and lawfulness. All three have stood watching as Palestinians were butchered in their thousands. In fact they’ve been supplying Israel with money and weapons so the slaughter can continue. Since 2014, the UK has sold £445 million in arms – including sniper rifles – to Israel. Since 1960, the US has supplied Israel ANNUALLY with $3 billion. And Germany has been sending tanks by the thousand to Israel.
Remember this moment, the next time the West tells us we must stand together against tyranny and oppression. In fact remember it now, as they shout about the brutality of ‘Putin’s War’ in Ukraine. I will never believe that the Gaza devils become the Ukraine angels.
Very good free Palestine
Thank you, James. Ditto..
Free Palestine is exactly right.

Stephen Flynn, SNP Westminster leader proposes to bring forward a motion in the House of Commons calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Time will tell.
On Tuesday 24 October 2023, Antonio Guterres speaking during a Security Council meeting at the United Nations (?) headquarters commented that the Hamas attack in southern Israel,
“did not happen in a vacuum.”
Palestinians have been under constant attack from the Israeli Defence Forces and settlers for years.
On 14 May 2018, the day the US Embassy was relocated to Jerusalem, the IDF shot and killed 60 Palestinians in Gaza. The deceased included clearly marked health care workers and children. Hundreds were wounded.
The unwarranted destruction of hospitals and the denial of food, water and other utilities in Gaza is an indictment of the Netanyahu administration. Israeli gunboats regularly fire at fishermen. It is to their credit that many honourable citizens of Israel are demanding an alternative to the existing administration.
