PAT+JUDE TALK ABOUT UKRAINIAN DOGS, SIMON HARRIS, IS UI WORTH THE COST, & HAROLD WILSON EXHAUSTED

Harold Wilson the British Prime Minister quit office in 1976, citing ‘exhaustion’. We also hear that he had at least two affairs. Was this a little sunshine in the sunset of the Wilson years, or a grubby carry-on that was no business of the British public?

Simon Harris has visited Europe and given Ursula Von der Leyen a good talking-to for over half an hour. Is this the Skiberren Eagle taking flight again?

The South of Ireland is a wealthy stage but can it afford to pay €1 million a month to feed Ukrainian pets? Is this love of man’s best friend gone mad?

Finally, is it really a good look that the Easter Rising people and many during the Tan War gave their lives for an independent Ireland but we continue to haggle about how much we’d be prepared to pay for irish unity?  Pass the bucket, please…

I have to agree with you Jude. It is a strange place when we have to haggle the costs of a United Ireland. Does anyone remember the costs of the reunification of Germany?
But it does pose the bigger question – if I might misquote Bob Dylan, ” Where have all the Republicans gone ”

Or more pertinent ” For what died the Sons of Roisin “

Can we call ourselves civilised when we still wage wars?

The slaughter, injuries, destruction and famine conditions in Gaza, combined with the erosion of respect for human rights, international law and diplomatic relations are all indicators of what constitutes barbarism in 2024.

Keir Starmer had no difficulty providing his support for a siege of Gaza which resulted in the lack of food, water, fuel and health care for Palestinians. Ursula Von Der Leyen had no difficulty expressing her ‘personal’ support for the Zionist administration in spite of racist comments made about Palestinians in the context of illegal land occupation and settler violence.

There were 14 votes in favour of a ceasefire in Gaza at the United Nations Security Council with an abstention recorded by the USA. With indecent haste, a White House spokesman stated the vote was not legally binding.

It came therefore, as no surprise that the Mexican embassy in Quito, Ecuador was attacked by Ecuadorian police and military forces on 5 April 2024 in violation of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The attack led to Mexico and Nicaragua severing diplomatic relations with Ecuador.

Billions of dollars/euro/pounds remain available to purchase weapons of mass destruction. It is clear that some politicians in the ‘civilised’ world have much to learn about politics, diplomacy and leadership given some recent ambiguous statements. The British Government is under pressure to disclose legal advice on arms sales to Israel. A statement from Downing Street stressed the Government’s desire to be ‘transparent’ with the public but that it had no plans to publish the legal advice while Mr Cameron argues a case for continuing to export arms to Israel.

It sounds like bread in one hand and a weapon of mass destruction in the other as some haggle about the cost of Irish Unity, with scant regard for the millions of pounds spent on guns and bombs.
