When the Press Council upheld my complaint against THE TIMES in February 1982
THE TIMES published their adjudication. But not a single British paper, GUARDIAN,
MORNING STAR representing Liberal nor Communist tendencies did so, nor did
the BBC.
Turning on the TV that evening (18/2/1982) I witnessed the Editor of THE TIMES being acclaimed EDITOR OF THE YEAR, by among others an old fellow-traveller of mine on the Hill of Howth Tram, Dr Conor Cruise O’Brien, Editor-in-Chief of THE OBSERVER.
O’Brien had come a long way. With his wife Maire Mac an tSaoi he had published
“A CONCISE HISTORY OF IRELAND” which to this amateur appeared to be the
product of great learning, in 1972, except where they said that the British Paratroops
had shot dead “rioters” in Derry on Sunday January 3oth of that year. (They baulked,
however, at describing the location as “Londonderrry.”
I mentioned the then Managing Editor of The TImes, John Grant, an ex-Officer in
the Brigade of Guards, a Balioll Scholar and compiler of Crosswords. A Scholar and
a Gentleman to his fingertips. But he lied through his teeth to me.
Last Saturday (17/8/2024) THE TIMES, no less, confirmed what was long thought,
that the then Cabinet Secretary, perjured himself in Australia in the “Spycatcher”
Trial. A man who read “Greats” at Christchurch, Oxford , Armstrong, like Benito Mussolini,
Nikolai Ceausescu and Keir Starmer were dubbed Knights of the Bath by British Monarchs.
If ever you have dealings with their like I think you’d be wise to take a hot shower.
Not a sham Poo. They are the Real Thing.
