“……..IS FIT FOR TREASONS STRATEGEMS AND SPOILS…….
LET NO SUCH MAN BE TRUSTED” Lorenzo in The Merchant
of Venice.
Perhaps Lorenzo was right. But should we assume that all with
music in their souls are over-endowed with the milk of human
kindness?
I read recently that many of the NAZI top brass were accomplished
musicians.
Ernst Rohm, leader of the Brown Shirts was one such. As was Hans
Frank, Nazi Governor General of Poland and director of four
extermination camps.
Rohm was not sacked in a day, but murdered on the Night of the Long
Knives in 1934 on the orders of his adored leader, Hitler.
Frank was executed as a war criminal in 1946 following trial at Nuremburg.
It seems to me that Cromwell and his Psalm singing cut-throats have a regiment of doppelgangers.
Edward Heath was an Organ Scholar and Conducted a Yuletide Cathedral Service
whilst his underlings tortured prisoners and murdered unarmed demonstrators in Ireland.
And the Elizabethan Edmund Spenser, blessed with a poetic soul, advocated genocide
in Ireland.
And today?
Well David Lammy, aged 11 won a Scholarship to THE KING’S SCHOOL
the Peterborough Church of England Cathedral school.
Not only possessed of a beautiful singing voice he has a brilliant legal academic
record both at London University’s School of Oriental and African Studies and
Harvard University.
I may be wrong in long suspecting that while at Harvard he was groomed by
CIA agents at Langley, Virginia, and State Dept. spooks from Foggy Bottom.
And that may yet eclipse the music in his soul.
Speaking of Venice
The city featured also in The Taming of the Shrew, inspiration for Cole Porter’s KISS ME KATE and
John Ford’s THE QUIET MAN.
A couple of weeks ago at London’s Barbican Theatre my Lady Wife and I watched a superb production of KISS ME KATE where the cast had music from the Soles of their feet upwards. The leading man
was Adrian Dunbar from Enniskillen.
Our tickets cost a mere £35 each. I understand that soulless idiots were paying thousands of pounds to
watch Oasis and Dublin hoteliers were robbing them blind.
Some years ago after we had booked a hotel in Dublin at a stated price to find it doubled when
we arrived because Garth Brooks was playing in Croke Park.
I heard him play (via radio) at Biden’s Inauguration, I doubt Biden ever had music in HIS soul!
