According to David Lloyd George PR was a device for defeating democracy, the principle
of which was that the majority should rule, and for bringing faddists of all kinds into
Parliament and establishing groups and disintegrating parties.
The Great British Statesman never changed his opinion of that “Device” and imposed it
on Ireland when advised by the “Top Brass” of the Royal Irish Constabulary (largely
composed of Freemasons) in order to defeat Sinn Fein. Sinn Fein, which had won
a landslide under the first past the post system in 1918 still grew from strength to strength. When Ireland was partitioned by Westminster by the Ireland Act of1920 not a single Irish vote Nationalist or Unionist in the House of Commons supported the Bill.
The Unionists in the Six partitioned counties believed in “winner takes all.”
Fianna Fail for generations formed governments despite the British imposed anti-democratic device. De Valera, Lemass, Haughey, Reynolds and Ahern at least
were capable and progressive leaders.
Labour on too many occasions propped up a party with an openly fascist
tradition, and when it, for once, went into coalition with Fianna Fail, pulled the plug
from under the blameless and brilliant Reynolds.
Fine Gael never won the love of the electorate to such an extent it could form a
Government on its own.
Fianna Fail’s days of glory, alas, are over.
The sooner PR is done away with most of the cranks and faddists should return to
the obscurity they deserve.
