Mark Durkan, former leader of the SDLP, and Heather Humphries, former Fine Gael minister, both have aired their views on politics generally and any talk of a united Ireland in particular. We check if they’re promoting a particular (and damaging ) way of thinking about a border poll for a UI.
Donald Trump has announced tariffs of 25% on goods coming into the US from Canada and Mexico, and 10% on goods coming from China. He’s also talked of tariffs for the EU and for Britain (maybe). Is this a classic case of willie-waving, or is it a clever plan to send the stock market downwards, so Trump and his rich chums can invest in said stocks, then Trump will make a U-turn and there won’t be a trade war, and Trump and chums will have made billions? Or is Trump, as Pat might argue, off his trolley?
Finally, have you ever worked in an environment where people furthered their career by sucking up to the boss? Not exactly couch-casting but grabbing the ideas of others and claiming them as their own? Pat and I check our experiences back in the day.

Jude, you made a point during the discussion with Pat about Nationalists in the south who subscribe to the notion of reconciliation first, before a border poll. Well I would hold the view that such people by definition, automatically exclude themselves from being called nationalist. You can’t agree to believe unionist aspirations supersede those of nationalist, while still proclaiming to be nationalist yourself.
The second point is, for those in the so-called nationalist establishment south and north who continuously trot out this reconciliation before unity line, are effectively telling unionists not to reconcile.
These false nationalists mouth-pieces (Irish Times) and political establishment need to be called out, and constantly exposed for the crooks they are.
“are effectively telling unionists not to reconcile.”
They don’t need telling.. especially not by anyone down South
Their leaders; Landed Gentry, Politicians, Orange Order and Clergy have
all been telling them that for hundreds of years
The large majority of Protestants/Unionists have no interest in a friendly relationship
(conciliation or reconciliation..??) as they have been brainwashed into believing that if they
let down their guard they will be seduced into a godless hell hole aka a United Ireland …!!
Good points, Kieran. I think the sooner SF and others get down to mapping out the possible shape of a united Ireland, the sooner people on all sides will get real about this enormously important project. Maybe Conor Murphy will galvanise a few FG and FFers into some concrete thinking….
