When I was very young my brother had several Cowboy annuals. I still have a few of them. They were created and illustrated in England, looking to America, with tales of the Wild West. They were very vivid and bold looking with bright colours. They took you somewhere else, for a short time and you travelled there on a steam train of your own imagination.

It took me a long time to really realise where I was growing up and at times, living on this island of ours, I have often felt very controlled and contained in a very dysfunctional culture, the remnants of which seem to hang about us like tattered flags, overlooking streets covered in debris from the night before.

However, I respond once more with a song that brings some of these feelings and images together. You could call it a deep form of  therapy. Better out than in. And to coin a phrase, “Better an eviction than a bad tenant.”

But if I was forced to read these children’s books every day, eventually I would tire of them. I would tire of them just as I tire of the current struggle in a beautiful land with some very ill people. But, hey! Let’s stay positive.

Into Your Arms I will Run.

When all of our babies

Are safe in their beds.

When all of the cowboys come home.

When all of the Indians are no longer dead

Singin’ songs of where their buffalo once roamed.

When all of these walls

Crumble and fall.

When all of our flags are no flags at all.

When all of my hurt has nowhere to fall.

Then into your arms I will run.

When all of the mountains fall to the ground

With all of the fishes in the sea.

When the circus of war has just left our town

Resting in your arms I will be.

When the rivers and dams break open and flood.

When all our feet of clay, just turn to mud.

When we don’t have to hate

We only have to love.

Then into your arms I will run.

When all of my tears

Have run to the sea.

When all of my hatred has flown.

I will return like a starling for my tea

And together our two hearts will be as one.

When the last leaf of time

Has fallen to the ground.

When all our angry voices just have no sound.

Don’t be alarmed

That’s just love turning around.

Then into your arms I will run.
