National delegates at The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday 22 June voted by 94 votes to 15 with 65 abstentions to support Mauritius in a bid to seek an advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on the dispute between the former British Colony and the legal status of the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean. The Chagos Islands had, together with Mauritius, been one British Colony but contrary to a United Nations Resolution passed in 1960, had been detached, by the Imperial Power from Mauritius, in 1962,3 years prior to Mauritian Independence. In the 1960s, during the Wilson Government in the UK , the inhabitants of Diego Garcia, an atoll in the Chagos Islands, were unceremoniously ejected from their homes and transported in open boats and, having sailed for some hundreds of miles dumped on Mauritius. By the British. The inhabitants, unlike those of the Malvinas, had darkish skins and not kith and kin to the British. The British Foreign Office is miffed, as it hoped, and still hopes, to settle this matter in bilateral dealings with Mauritius. The British leased Diego Garcia to the United States in the interests, they say, of “defence” although the territory is many thousands of miles from British soil, and of United States soil. Another expression recently used was “global security.” A more honest explanation is US/UK Global Hegemony, for the United States has built a huge naval and Airforce Base on Diego Garcia from which it has launched murderous attacks on various countries. It is understood that prisoners on their way to be tortured and incarcerated in various territories have been processed through Diego. But Britain’s Foreign Office, currently under Boris Johnson, would like to talk with the Mauritians without the international community having a look in, and if required to counterfeit a judicial process , to indulge in some WIdgery-Pokery.We are back where Ireland was with the Boundary Commission in 1925 with one Nationalist, Eoin MacNeil, pitted against one Orangeman and A New Zealand Judge from a territory (in Desmond Fitzgerald’s words) whose representatives were as reactionary as Orangemen. In 1949 when NATO was founded Attlee accepted the advice of his Cabinet Secretary that for “strategic reasons SOME PART OF IRELAND should remain within His Majesty’s Dominions” and pretended to vest the future of the Six Counties in the gift of the Micky Mouse “Parliament” at Stormont. Now that Shannon is a United States facility in practice NATO hardly needs the North.I recently described British “Diplomacy” when dealing with less well-armed societies as akin to the sportsmanship of BIG JULIE when shooting crap, with special dice, in GUYS ‘n’ DOLLS. I think you may endorse the description.
