It was with deep regret that I opened my online newspaper this morning to see that the Labour Party had retained their Peterborough seat in yesterday’s election. It shouldn’t have been that way. The Brexit Party’s Mike Greene should have asserted that party’s strangle-hold on British politics by putting a strangle-hold on the Labour Party’s Lisa Forbes, but sad to say Forbes beat Greene by some 700 votes. But as with all these things, drill a little deeper and you’ll find out why. All you have to do is ask some Brexit party insiders. They’ll tell you that Labour relied on a mainly Pakistani vote in its inner-city wards: “Some of these houses had fourteen people in them registered to vote. It would be interesting to see how many of them voted Labour.”
So you see – Labour won with the help of poor immigrants to Britain. The Brexit party always said the immigrants were the problem, and it looks like Peterborough has proved them right. There really ought to be a law.
Meanwhile, back in Doonbeg, two sons of that friend-of-the-downtrodden Donal Trump were doing a tour of all the pubs in Doonbeg. They were roundly cheered at every turn, and US flags were hung out in their father’s honour. They cheered when one of the sons shouted “Who here supports the Trumps?” and they cheered even louder when one of the sons called for a free drink for everyone in the tiny pub. Even the local priest got into it. There he was, humble in the presence of greatness, while one of the sons shouted that the good Father had promised a place in heaven for the Trumps. Another cheer.
For a second I could have sworn I saw Barry Fitzgerald in a jaunting car, tipping his cap to their lordships. Sure aren’t the Irish people the finest people you’d find anywhere. Others may sell their souls, but the Irish stand on principle. And of course, the largesse and charity-god-bless-yer-honour of the Big Man up at the Big House.
