STATUS OF THE ROYAL IRISH CONSTABULARY by Donal Kennedy

On March 6, 1919, a British Cabinet Minister, answering a question in the House of Commons in Westminster explained –

“It was decided by the Government that the Royal Irish Constabulary could not be permitted to join the National Union of Police and Prison Officers, in as much as the Royal Irish Constabulary is a semi-military force directly under the control of the Crown, and subject in many respects to the same conditions of employment as the army and navy forces.”

The quotation comes from Hansard, 113 Series 5 House of Commons Debates, column 626 of the 6th of March 1919.

How comforting to know that the Taoiseach, the Minister of Justice, and the collective brain cells of THE IRISH TIMES know better!
