SOME REFLECTIONS ON THE LATEST REVOLUTION IN IRELAND by Donal Kennedy

The latest Election has proven that most Irish people, far from being ashamed of their forebears, who, quietly in the polling booths in 19i8, established an Irish Republic and endorsed the Prospectus launched by the Insurgents of 1916, are proud to commemorate them, and the sacrifices they suffered at the hands of their enemies – the
British Government and its agents. Foremost among those agents were the Regegade Irishmen of the Royal Irish Constabulary.

The British until last week might have congratulated themselves that they had finally bought or frightened the Irish into silence or total amnesia. History was abolished and fake history issued from politicians, academics, media and some pulpits supposedly to inform, instruct, and pacify the once wild Irish.

But, the fools, the fools, the fools! They were so successful, that the foolish son a “cute hoor”  “Justice Minister” Charlie Flanagan arranged for a National Commemoration of the RIC, and the “revisioinist ” scam blew up
in the faces of “Elizabeth’s Irish Whores” who will never, however hard they try, be able to scrape the egg off their faces.

For the first time for many decades, “Rebel Cork” appears to have recovered its soul. The GAA’s County Teams for Hurling and Gaelic Football, wll be wearing Black Jerseys, commemorating the Centenary of the martyrdom of Lord Mayors Tomas MacCurtain and Terence MacSwiney and the burning of Cork City by Crown Forces.MacCurtain was mudered
in his own home by the RIC and MacSwiney died on hunger-strike.

In the 1980s the Greater London Council chose to honour MacSwiney. (In 1920 many London Councillors, including Clement Attlee, had attended his funeral.) No Cork TDs or Councillors, nor representatives of University College Cork deigned to attend the London event in the 1980s. Two UCC Professors, Alfred O’Rahilly and  Professor
Stockley, were elected to Cork Corporation, as Sinn Feiners, with MacCurtain in 1920. Professor O’Rahilly later became President of UCC, and following the death of his wife was ordained a priest in the Jesuit Order. I await
hearing how UCC and the Jesuits welcome Cork’s recovery of self-respect.
