Centenary or Partition – by Michael Lagan

“We gave nationalism space to understand, explore and celebrate who and what they are” proclaimed Ian Paisley on Sunday Politics.  This coming from a man who is an MP from a party which perpetuated a sectarian divide between Catholics and Protestants in the North.

DUP MP Sammy Wilson once applauded a UDA ‘Doomsday plan’ to kill as many Catholics as possible to ensure a sectarian Northern Irish statelet in which a Protestant majority would rule with an iron fist.  Gerrymandering was their ultimate weapon especially in towns and cities like Derry which had an Irish Catholic majority but strangely had a minority vote to ensure unionism controlled all.

When will unionism realise, nationalism will not celebrate nor mark the Centenary in any positive way, no matter how the Secretary of State or Boris Johnson or indeed Northern Irish unionism sugar coat it.  In the end, the Centenary is a celebration of partition. A partition which attempted to force Irish citizens to be British and brought with it nothing but bloodshed and anger which has had lasting consequences to this very day.

“And you dared to call me a terrorist, while you look down your gun.  As I think of all the deed that you have done.  You have plundered many nations, divided many lands.  You have terrorised my people, with an iron hand.”
