I read an article in today’s Irish Times and found myself thinking about a sketch some time ago on the US comedy show Saturday Night Live. Dr Anthony Fauci, Trump’s top medical man, had been recently critical of some things Trump had said about Covid. In the sketch Fauci (played brilliantly by Brad Pitt) is told that that President Trump has reacted to his, Fauci’s, criticism by saying the medical man has his full support. Fauci/Pitt shrugs his shoulders: “OK, that’s it. He’s firing me.”
Now back to that Irish Times article. In a B(ritish)BC Spotlight programme being aired tonight, Boris Johnson declares that there will be no referendum on the reunification of Ireland for “a very, very long time to come”. Like Trump, Johnson has an impressive record as a liar. Ask any DUP politician – they’ll tell you. So let’s rejoice in Johnson’s words. That probably means a referendum on the reunification of Ireland will take place in a very, very short time to come.
PS. In the same programme Micheál Martin, the leader of Fianna Fáil (The Republican Party) will also denounce any early border poll as “explosive and divisive”. No wonder there are people in Fianna Fáil who look forward to Micheál’s political head being delivered on a plate as soon as his term as Taoiseach is over.
