To dispel rumours that the British Foreign Secretary’s country retreat at Chevening had been,
during her stint in that office the venue of a cocaine sniffing party Liz Truss released a photograph which might make sensitive noses smell rats.
It was published in THE TIMES and shows her at Chevening with the Foreign Ministers
Ministers of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania some four or five months before Russia’s Special
Military Operation in Ukraine which began on 27 February 2022.
It its significant that the meeting took place away from Whitehall, where such meetings might
be better observed. And it seems that it was unrecorded in THE TIMES when it happened.
Ten years ago I visited Estonia’s capital, Tallinn, for a few hours during a cruise to the Baltic.
Hatred of Russians and Russia was palpable, though they had departed nearly 25 years
earlier, and showed no sign of wanting to return.
Six months ago, in early December 2022, Angela Merkel, the former German Chancellor, admitted.that when in 2014 she co-sponsored the Minsk Agreements, ostensibly to establish peace between Russia and Western Europe, she did so in bad faith.
Like King Duncan in Macbeth who had trusted the traitor Thane of Cawdor, I had considered Angela Merkel, the most trustworthy of European politicians.
Her purpose, and that of the other Western signatories to the Minsk Agreements was to enable the Ukraine junta, to expand, equip, and train its forces to continue its murderous attacks on Russian speakers and members of the Russian Orthodox Church, suppress monasteries, and obliterate all traces of Russian culture in Ukraine.
Today Poland’s armed forces outnumber those of Germany. Poland played the same ignoble
game when it made a non-aggression pact with Germany’s Nazis in 1934, and joined
Hitler in grabbing part of Czechoslovakia in 1938.
On October 5 1938 Winston Churchill, was, rightly, contemptuous of Poland’s behaviour, as he
condemned Neville Chamberlain’s surrender to Hitler at Munich in a speech in the Commons.
Whatever justification existed for NATO’s existence, it evaporated when the Soviet Union withdrew its forces from the countries it had liberated from Nazi tyranny in 1945.
President Clinton promised the Soviet leader Gorbachev that the US and NATO would not threaten the Soviet Union, but reckoned that his promise did not apply to is successor, the Russian Federation.
The new Russia under President Putin sought peace.
In Munich in 2012, in Angela Merkel’s presence, he denounced the practice of the US and NATO of launching wars on countries which had not attacked them, unless they did so in accordance with the United Charter, and a vote by the UN Security Council.
President Putin was voicing the same demand as that of Eamon De Valera, in Geneva in the 1930s when, speaking for Ireland, he demanded that the signatories of the League of Nations Covenant, honour their obligations to the maintenance of peace and the imposition of effective sanctions on Japan for its invasion of Manchuria and Italy for the Rape of Abyssinia.
The British Delegate at Geneva, Sir Anthony Eden, denounced De Valera as a firebrand.
But to give the British their due, they made Mussolini pay for the rape of Abyssinia, into the coffers of the British-owned Suez Canal Company, for the Rapists’ short and comfortable passage with their arms and equipment through it, saving them many thousands of miles inconvenience passing through Gibraltar and around the Cape of Good Hope, which might have sapped their stamina for satisfactory atrocities.
In February 1933 the Unionist Irish Times warned of the dire consequences to follow the electoral return of De Valera and Fianna Fail to office.
In March 1933 the same paper rejoiced in Adolf Hitler’s accession to power in Berlin.
In 1935 when De Valera demanded League of Nations sanctions on Italy, he was attacked by the mainly Catholic Blueshirt Fascists for not supporting “Catholic Italy.”
It seems that today the principles upheld by Fianna Fail, Labour and other Republicans in the 1930s have been scrapped by Ireland’s public figures.
Some of them might be described as Groucho Marxists.
Groucho Marx once declared – “These are my Principles. If you don’t like them, I have others.
Russia’s incursion into Ukraine was provoked by the Kiev junta, which was virtually hand-picked by Barack Obama’ s Under-Secretary of State, the foul-mouthed “neo-con” Victoria Nuland.
