I think that the Western World is probably at its most rotten as I write.
The United States, Britain and much of the EU are up past their eyebrows
in genocide and their media are happy with the murder of over 170 heroic
reporters and photographers in Gaza. Heroic and honest Englishmen such
as Robert Fisk and Jon Snow consistently risked their lives to report from
the Middle East and other trouble spot, the brilliant Australian John Pilger
exposed the British and US organised coup in Indonesia which involved the
slaughter of upwards of a million civilians and the transfer of the archipelago’s
almost limitless resources to western corporations. Fisk and Pilger got the most
nasty, grudging obituaries in THE TIMES.
The American Government and fawning western media praise the killing of
Hamas leaders. MI6 and the CIA have plotted and overseen murder and mayhem around the
world for generations, they were puppet-masters who stayed in the shadows.
These days their top people hold joint press conferences.

The Review in History Today is of “The Newsmongers: A History of Tabloid Journalism”
by Terry Kirby. The reviewer is Rachel Matthews, Associate Professor of Journalism at Coventry University, a former journalist.
My interest is not in tabloid journalism but in Professor Matthews relating how in July
2011 she was chairing a panel on ethics and press standards on the morning Rupert Murdoch announced the closure of the News of The World in the wake of revelations
about malpractice .
The panel included Tory Peer Baron Black of Brentwood, then executive director of the Telegraph Media Group, and a former chair of the now defunct Press Complaints Commission, and the late Bob Satchwell, founding executive of the Society of Editors.
Some thirty years before Professor Matthews was chairing that panel on ethics and press
standards I politely asked THE TIMES to retract an unethical claim on its front page.
I find Professor Matthews’s innocence hard to credit.
