“Why can’t a woman be more like a man?” an exasperated Rex Harrison used to ask in My Fair Lady. If he was around today he’d find that she was being offered more opportunities to be just that. The latest comes today, with the declaration that the opportunity for women to appear ‘in the conflict zone’ will be upped to where women may well be active combatants in the British army, not just support staff.
I expect there’ll be women who’ll hail this as another step on the long road to equality. And certainly it’s true that women are discriminated against in our society in all sorts of ways, including their role in the British armed forces. There is some argument that women would not have the physical strength to carry the weaponry load that the modern soldier must haul around, but the word is they’ll find ways to accommodate that and clear a path so women can get right up to the firing line. In other words, women will have the same opportunity to kill other human beings that men currently have.
That, of course, is where the drive towards equality becomes semi-insane. For years women argued that if females were properly represented in politics, there’d be a different way of looking at the world and that world would become more compassionate, more caring than the abrasive macho place it was. That sounded good until Thatcher came along and it emerged that equality would or at least could mean sharing all the nasty, brutal attitudes that distinguish the male world. Maybe it’s a bit like Catholics in the northern media during our own conflict: when the BBC or some other radio/TV outlet wanted to put a republican through the interview wringer, as often as not a Catholic was chosen to do the job – and they did it with a will.
How tragic that women, who could bring compassion and non-aggressive attitudes to politics (and every other area) have sought instead to ape the worst characteristics of men. And surely I’m not alone in seeing this latest demand to provide equal opportunities for trigger-squeezing in the British army as essentially a victory of men over women. When the colonial master gets his native to ape him, the job of colonialization is complete. It looks like men have won the battle of the sexes with the aid of women.
“Don’t put your daughter on the stage, Mrs Worthington” Noel Coward sang. Today he’d more likely be begging “Don’t put your daughter on the front line”.

If you want to see real beautiful women in action turn to Israel, full equal rights there! They fly bomber planes, carry weaponry, drive tanks.
They can do anything a man can do, face to face combat, can read maps take orders, follow instruction. Can kill when required to do so.
I suppose you will be telling me next they are the colonial masters.
Hold on – I need to consult some people living in the Gaza Strip…
In fairness to the IRA they have always believed in equal rights Martina Anderson and Carál Ní Chuilín to name but two.
ONE TRICK PONY NEIL
You’re stirring the pot there Jude.
“How tragic that women, who could bring compassion and non-aggressive attitudes to politics (and every other area) have sought instead to ape the worst characteristics of men. ”
Well….women ….where do we start? The reality is that you can’t really generalise about anything . Women have always been perfectly capable of “demonic” behaviour .There are plenty of female killers filling the gaols . In fact there is a court case just popping up in the local news which involves females accosting another female and forcibly shaving off her hair and kicking her. There is also something about a {possibly same} female being involved in putting someone in a wheelie bin after an assault..
You mentioned Thatcher , but we’ve had plenty of examples such as the verbal aggression of Bernadette Smyth on television a few days ago too.Physicality is only a step away. As far as the army is concerned …..look at some of the poor specimens of manhood that were forced to do National Service back in the day .Comedians like Frankie Howard and probably a few even weedier specimens were made to join up . They had to be taught how to kill by bayoneting sandbags. That’s how it’s done.. On the other hand , there are plenty of men and women who willingly join an army whose sole purpose is to exist to eventually be aggressive. That’s why it gets money to exist in the first place ..They are willing participants.
It’s a myth to think of women as somehow weaker ,when they have possibly a greater capacity to endure pain than males . Well, my wife tells me I’d die if I had to have a baby!!! Women can be nurturing but so can men. Women can be assaulted by men but women can also assault men. They each might use differing tactics but a weapon of any sort levels the playing field anyway. I’m sure the lightweight weaponry that is collapsible and easily carried could be provided for any women without the physical heft to kill in combat with heavyweight weapons. Then there are plenty of physically fit women around too…fitter than many men.
Equality should mean what it says on the tin as long as you are fit for the job.

Equality! When did you last see a girl/woman hold a door open for a man?
You think, Jude, that some women may hail this as a victory on the long road to equality – but what about the rest of the women?
If we find ourselves in another world war situation and conscription is brought in, how many women would appreciate that aspect of equality
We hear a lot of talk of equality in professional sport, especially in tennis where the women are agitating for equal financial reward to men.
The simple solution is, okay both sexes are equal, so we will not separate the sexes. Men and women will compete against each other – now that would be total equality.
But somehow I don’t think it would be too popular with women.
This came as an email but I thought it sheds so much light on the discussion, it’ be unfair not to share it…

Just wanted to congratulate you on another ground-breaker in your recurring theme, ‘I hate women and Brits’.
Clearly, vast tracts of progress in Western society have passed you by and done nothing to soften what is emerging as your two central tenets of hatred – women and Brits.
I’ve passed the article on to a few left wing feminist writer friends of mine – I hope they give you their feedback. My two cents’ worth: a glimpse into the ugly mindset that stands over tarring and feathering, the killing of innocent women in our own conflict and your own constant micro-chauvinism (yeah yeah, shut up, Virginia.)
You write so often on this topic, I’m beginning to think I see your own insecurity when it comes to sexuality in how you frequently relate these topics.
Best wishes, it must be very lonely where you are.

Women and Brits…and vegetarians!
Apparently we veggies are no better than the driver of the train to Auschwitz.
Jeezis…!!! I must have missed the part that Michael refers to.Are we reading the same blog here?
Ho, ho, ho,
I wonder would it be fair to assume that you will not be receiving a Christmas card from Michael this year.
I tend to find that people who claim to know how others feel without asking them, tend to be slightly unhinged themselves (with reference to Michael claiming to know that you hate women and British people).
It is actually quite funny to read his claim to believe that you have “insecurities” about sexuality when I think it is probably a big mirror that Michael needs! Might be an idea for a Christmas present for him, did he leave you an address? He can polish it on Christmas morning and do a bit of reflecting
Not so keen on his not so subtle threat to forward your details on to his “left wing feminist friends” who knows you could end up being cyber attacked or fraped on Facebook.

Sorry for repeating this but your site cut the bottom of my original contribution!

He can polish it on Christmas morning and do a bit of self reflecting while waiting for his invite to Christmas dinner with one of his left wing feminist friends.
Not so keen on his not so subtle threat to forward your details on to his “left wing feminist friends”. Who knows, you could end up being cyber attacked or fraped on Facebook. A threat like this generally means you have crossed into an area where someone belonging to or associated with a group which is hyper sensitive about its ethos perceives that you have made a comment which is at variance with its principles. “How very dare you”!
I disagree with you and think women should have full equality with no bar on any job and think you may be wearing rose tinted glasses by generalising women as being inherently altruistic and peaceful. Try watching some of the cctv footage outside the city’s nightclubs on any weekend night and it will demonstrate that quite a few females are every bit as viscous as their male counterparts and statistics which attribute 40% of domestic violence to female perpetrators.
I don`t think women should be able to fight wars, although the way the British fight their squalid little conflicts nowadays, ie, firing shells from miles out at sea, they wouldn`t have to see the whites of their enemies eyes anyway. Maybe the rules of war ( how weird) should be changed so we have women regiments fighting each other, I`d certainly pay for that. They could have battles in evening wear followed by swim wear, or am I thinking of something else?
I’m inclined to agree with you, Jude, that combat is not the best place for women to assert their equality. How much better if the perceived female “values” of hearth and home would persuade nations to lay down their arms.
However, allowing that far more non-combatants than combatants die in war, it is likely that women, for the time being, are safer in the front line.
Jimmy Reid was correct when he stated that the rat race was for rats and that he was a human being. The fact that some men and some women may want to drive tanks, fly bombers and take orders to kill will result in more deaths, profits for arms manufacturers and the proliferation of expensive computer games. 007 movies past and present have done little to promote the dignity of women and help to perpetuate cold war stereotypes. Who was it that posed the question, “Is it more obscene to lie with a prostitute or to lie in the Commons?”
Jude
I usually try to keep up with the news, including RTE. The papers I read are mostly every day the Daily Mail, Times.
I could not figure out who this Bernadette Smyth was, so I googled….. The poser the I love me look at me lips pooched lady.
Tonight I am in a real dark place, my heart is heavy and I am choking on a big lump in my throat. It’s this time of the year, I miss my parents, I miss my brother who hung himself. My thoughts are all of yesterday memories.
So before I forget, because I am going to run a bath and have a long soak, poor a glass of wine put some proper music on…
I would like to wish you, and all your followers a very very merry Christmas, and a happy 2015,
Norma
Norma – that was truly touching. And to you and yours a perfect Christmas too – Nollaig shona duit – a peaceful Christmas to you.
Have a good Christmas, Norma and Norma(n). That was quite a sensitive and thoughtful post. Thanks for sharing it.
Norma, what your poor brother did is sadly getting more and more common, we all know people who took their own lives. Just look on it as a medical condition, like any other terrible medical condition. God is mercy, God bless you and all your loved ones.
Before I get pulled up POUR
It seems like a good moment to wsh everyone seasonal greetings…I may not get another chance until the new year!!!!!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!
Poor Norma!
Why is it, that every time somebody talks about women in politics they must revert to images of Maggie Thatcher? Thatcher was only one woman and certainly is/was not some sort of homogenous female type. This was a woman who took on a male values system and chose to succeed by emulating all the negative the traits of capitalist, war-mongering and jingoistic traits of men. Clare Daly is a politician who stands up for oppressed people in our society today, yet Margaret Thatcher is seen as a better metaphor for women’s political activity? I think we need to improve and be fair in our imagery. I can think of quite a lot of women who do us proud.
As for the Rosie who has been depicted here with the post…it wasn’t long before she was relegated to the kitchen sink when the ‘bread winner’ returned from the war. But of course, how many of us reflect on how these women were treated, Yet we continue to marvel at their role while almost never contemplating or articulating their bad treatment by the British establishment.
With you pretty much all the way, Déirdre. I think the danger for women is that, as they should, they seek equality, they are seduced into emulation of the worst features of males, especially in the business and political world. Thatcher gets attention because she was the first British PM and because she wrecked so many lives in this country and her own. I’m equally a fan of Clare Daly – she can punch her weight with any politician, male or female. The pity is that we have to single her out – there should be more like her in the Dail. And fewer like the leader of the Labour party.
Jude,
No posts from you today, are you busy buying presents? Ceannaire why why why do you think I may be a Norman. I can assure you I am a Norma, pray for me all you good Catholics I am having a hysterectomy, not many men have had this performed on them.
A young man of 19 lost his girlfriend and his job last week… Then proceeded to take his own life, his Mother the next day tried to follow him, she is critically ill, so as you can imagine, anybody who has had a loved one commit suicide, it brings all the pain back.
In today’s Sunday Times Jude, ( I have only started to read it 18.00 hrs). I wonder is that why Ceannaire thinks I am a Norman????
My Father had he ever have needed blood, it would have been Khaki, he was a strict RSM, that’s regimental Sargent major for those of you not familiar with army talk. Like MFO or RTU. married families overseas or return to unit, respectively.
Any way getting back to why I am contacting you, SF is up in the polls…… Yes yes and GA is down, what to you make if that eh eh.
But the real juicy but I have kept for last, a new mini TV series 50 weeks of pure bliss, it’s all about the British Empire, set in Indian, at the ” Royal Club” the sign reads no Dogs and no Indians, chutzpah cheek eh what Rodger, I can’t wait, I just love that time, the sex, the clothes, the whole Shabang.
Now I know most of your Republican friends won’t be amused, but they will watch it in secret.
To think my beloved Queen Victoria ruled every corner of the world, it amazes me.
Should those rebels in 1916, never existed I am quite sure Dublin would have had an underground tube station, and probably been better than London, because us Irish do have a nicer disposition than the cockneys, they are so rude.
Need to go I am only on page 3 well worth £2.50.
