You may have inferred from my 16 September BLOG that Irish Home Rule was planned for Imperial purposes.
To remove disquiet in the white Dominions with large Irish populations. To defuse the anger of Irish Americans, and foster co-operation between those urged by Kipling to take up the White Man’s Burden and the land and resources of men of a darker tint.
The contempt for the Irish voiced by Winston Churchill when he supported Home Rule should surprise nobody unless they endorse Professor Lord Bew’s claim that Churchill was at heart a Hibernophile.
The revelation that Lord Morley, who was regarded as “the Father of Home Rule” held us Irish in total contempt almost took my breath away.
But it might be argued that the experience of Morley and Churchill was somewhat limited when it came to Ireland and their judgement stemmed from knowing only the John Redmonds of our country.
For John Redmond, Ireland’s August Destiny was to provide muscle for British military and naval domination of black and brown skinned people in normal times, and cannon-fodder for major wars.
What Irishman or Irishwoman can read Redmond’s London 1913 St Patrick’s Day speech without shame and without anger? What stranger believing Redmond the elected leader of the Irish people could honestly say that our country was worthy of respect?
It seems John Bruton and his admirers and today’s so-called “Reform” group share Redmond’s perverse and perverted sentiments.
Then again, who, surveying today’s Dail and Seanad, mainstream Irish media and academic historians could say that their vision of Ireland’s future is an improvement on Redmond’s?
Ireland as Airstrip Two for US/UK warmongering?
“Rendition” flights to Guantanamo?
