Dear Editor,
The First Minister for Northern Ireland, Arlene Foster, is pleased with Brexit. (Guardian, October 29th). Unlike Theresa May, Arlene advocated a Leave vote. The electorate here voted by 56% to 44% to Remain. Nevertheless, Arlene argues that the vote here does not matter. We joined the EU as part of the UK and we will leave it as part of the UK. This is simplistic. It is certainly not an argument one would make if one had the interests of all the people in the north at heart. The people whose interests Arlene has at heart are the citizens of England and Wales who want out of Europe.
The United Kingdom is now a Disunited kingdom, disintegrating before our eyes. It is time for the unionists to seek a better deal for their constituency, especially the farming and business community. The Unionist parties should be looking to Dublin rather than to London as the place where their interests will be best protected.
The population of the north makes up 3% of the total UK population which would make the unionist population in the north less than 2% of the UKpopulation. It is no wonder Unionists carry so little weight in Westminster. If they opted to take their seats in an all-Ireland parliament they would make up at least 25% of the representatives. Will it happen? Anything is possible after Dr Paisley’s change of heart.
