“FALLEN ARCH by Perkin Warbeck
At around 9.30 am on Wednesday morning the huge natural arch in the sea cliffs known The Azure Window, collapsed. After standing for over tens of thousands of years it collapsed like a cheap deckchair and disappeared under the waves in less than ten seconds.
It was to the island of Gozo (Malta’s smaller sister island) what, say, The Giant’s Causeway is to Norneverland. One heck of a Mecca for tourists and other travellers. If the Northern Yunes are reeling with shock this week the Gozitans and the Maltese will understand.
The weather had been particularly stormy during the night and there were reports too of a slight seaquake. There were no eyewitnesses though there was at least one earwitness.
Coincidentally , the Liverpool-born novelist Nicholas Montserrat lived in the nearby village of Gharb for many years. He was the author of, erm, The Cruel Sea.

The Perkin, who took these snaps at 4.45 on Wednesday afternoon was humming the old classic:
-In time
The Rockies may crumble
Girbraltar may tumble
They’re only made of clay….
When, turning to his left, he spotted this other celebrated rock formation roughly a hundred yards south of the former Azure Rock:
Pic 4: The Crocodile Rock.
It hasn’t gone away, you know.
Or as (gulp) Ira Gershwin might say:
-It’s here to stay.

“Had six buzzards at my place on Thursday afternoon as I arrived home. Start of the mating season and hopefully they pick the same nest site as last year which is just across the field from my house.”
