‘BY THEIR FRUITS SHALL YOU KNOW THEM:Chapter 2 Wiliam Pitt and Herbert Asquith’ by Donal Kennedy

IN 1782 the Irish Volunteers, led and mostly maned by Anglican Protestants, paraded in Dublin’s College Green between the wholly Anglican Irish Parliament and the Anglican Trinity College. Their artillery pieces were festooned with the slogan-  ‘Free Trade Or Else’

The following year Westminster passed the Renunciation Act renouncing “In perpetuity” the right to make laws for Ireland. Henceforth only the King (or his successors) Lords and Commons of Ireland, were deemed competent to legislate for Ireland.

Free trade was achieved with a wonderful effect on Irish manufactures and trade. Quality Irish goods competed with British ones on world markets. Which is why Westminster reneged on the 1783 Act. Members of the Irish Parliament were bribed to betray their country and ushered in a century of unspeakable misery for Ireland.

Following the unification of Germany in 1871 the growth of her industry and commerce by 1890 exercised the fears of British industrialists  of the competition. In 1904 politicians were plotting to have Germany smashed. France and Russia were roped in by Britain to supply the bulk of the troops whilst British ships were to sweep competitive trade from the oceans and impose a starvation blockade on German ports. It was carefully calculated and not sleepwalking. Herbert Asquith was a Liberal Imperialist in league with the Conservatives in that criminal conspiracy from the start. Their pickpocket fingerprints and jackbooted footprints can be seen today wherever misery endures.
