Attending Westminster with all the bobs and bells doesn’t come cheap.
According to the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (http://www.theipsa.org.uk/mp-costs/), during 2015/16, Margaret Ritchie’s expenses were £200,118.61. This doesn’t include Ms Ritchie’s full salary of £74,962 which, like all SDLP MPs, she fully draws. During 2015/16, the cost of Ms Ritchie’s staff alone was £142,945.46.
In 2014/15, Ms Ritchie’s cost to the taxpayer was an eye-watering £213,990.73. Again, this does not include her salary of £74,962. In 2014/15, the staff expenditure alone was £152,700.64. Who are these expensive staff? Was there an open recruitment process? Are some of them local or retired SDLP councillors topping up their councillor pay and/or pensions?
During her stays at Westminster, Ms. Ritchie’s hotel costs are frequently listed at £450. Was this for one night? Say it isn’t so! If you still find this too hard to believe, please check the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority website at http://www.theipsa.org.uk/mp-costs/your-mp/margaret-ritchie/.
The real hidden perk is the pension plan. For example, if an MP serves 15 years, the pension builds at a rate of 1/40th of final salary, giving 15/40ths or 37.5% of final salary (approx. £28,110.75 per annum). To buy a similar pension on the open market today would cost £880,000! So if you fancy a change in career, see MPs’ Pension Scheme Briefing Paper Page 7 at the following link (http://researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk/documents/SN06283/SN06283.pdf)
According to the Irish News, (http://www.irishnews.com/news/2014/01/30/news/mp-claimed-hotel-costs-while-renting-out-flat-82250/ ) shortly after his election, Ms. Ritchie’s colleague, Dr. Alasdair McDonnell, purchased a flat in London. From 2005 until 2009, the article states Dr McDonnell claimed over £86,000 on expenses towards the mortgage interest on his Vauxhall flat. When he bought the property in 2005, the article goes onto say he also claimed £13,800 in stamp duty from parliamentary expenses and £1,360 for blinds and curtains. According to the Parliamentary register of interests (https://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm/cmregmem/ 170502/170502.pdf), Dr. McDonnell now receives a rental income over £10,000 per year for a flat in London. This is whilst simultaneously claiming hotel expenses: in 2015/16, his accommodation expenses in London were £4,222.10.
I’m sure the people of South Belfast would like to know if this is the same property purchased with the help of the taxpayer, considering Dr McDonnell is still claiming for accommodation during his trips to London. It’s no secret that the value of property in London has increased dramatically since 2005. If this is indeed the same flat, will the taxpayer gain from its increased value, or a share of its rental income?
These are not trivial sums. A nurse in the under threat Downe Hospital can expect to earn between £21,000 and £27,000: so Ms. Ritchie’s total cost to the taxpayer is equivalent to the salaries of over 11 nurses!
It’s time for the people of South Down and South Belfast to ask whether taking full advantage of the Westminster scam and milking every last drop from the taxpayer is in the best interests of their areas.
At the very least our MPs might reflect on whether an annual cost of over a quarter of a million is right and proper with such cutbacks to our local services. Protesting about cutbacks to the Downe Hospital, whilst at the same time spending like it’s Celtic Tiger times at the Galway Races isn’t right.
Please take the time to independently fact-check this on http://www.theipsa.org.uk/mp-costs/ – there’s already enough fake news as it is!

Good to see some hard facts about the caviar that the SDLP trio gain from selling their souls to the Queen of England. They are quite brazen about the fact that they think it is a good idea to prostitute themselves to the British parliament for slightly more than 30 pieces of silver. Imagine being forced into a closed room with that trio to listen to the ‘policies’ of the SDLP.
Maybe the SDLP should change their policy title to ‘Gravy Train’!
Good for you John, do everything you can to make this information known to the conned public. Pretending to swear an oath to the Queen for my benefit what a load of old bollox. Everyone has a pet hate mine is sleek con merchants I wonder do these people fit the bill LOL, have to be careful these days what you write. I read all the eulogies after they buried a politician, how i laughed who got four hundred pounds of me as a so called contribution to the party(read between then lines). It never did speed anything up or make a button of difference to my planning application. It came over to speak to me at a function a good while later and as i seen it walking towards our group i walked towards it and told it to fuck off and turned and went back to the group the wife said what did you say and i said i told it a joke forget it . I told everyone about the person because i wanted nothing of it and still it kept getting elected hmm fekin teachers for you vote for anything so called respectable LOL . I know i know i was very inexperienced at the time with planning, It was my first project and i was nervous and excited wanting all to go well. An ex friend told me to talk to this local politician and all would be well. When i told my architect he looked at me as if i wasn’t wise and said i told you to go ahead and build, with the plans i had submitted and the local area, you were a shoo in for permission. All you would have done is put your build ahead by a good bit but you would have annoyed no one. Bet this person milked the system to.
Very selective information. For example what was Pat Doherty MP’s staffing cost for the same year? Answer – £142,557. And Francie Malloy MP? Answer £140000. But obviously in John & Judes opinion they and their staff earn every penny when they don’t deserve a mention in this article. Oh I forgot ….. they don’t even go to Westminster. But why let facts cloud a sensationalist piece of fake news. It is alway important to kick an SDLP target with a bit contrived spin. It would be nice to know how much the likes of the BBC pay these lazy journalists and commentators to spout their selective opinions
It can’t have escaped your notice, Martin, that I didn’t write this article, “But obviously in John & Judes opinion” – read the label, please.
Hi Jude
I read the label and it said by John mc cartan and underneath by Jude Collins.
I may have wrongly assumed that you agreed with the content given the absence of any comment to the contrary on your behalf.
Apologies
Martin, you’d be as well to reply to the article in its entirety or not at all.
How many SF MPs take salaries from Westminster? None as far as I’m aware. Please correct if wrong.
How many SF MPs have purchased a property with taxpayer support and now rent it in London? Again, none if I’m aware, but please correct the record if mistaken.
Instead this is an SDLP spin doctor effort to focus on only one expenses line item rather than viewing the entire SDLP gravy train in its totality and then comparing the entirety with SF.
I’m sure we’ll all look forward to Martin clarifying this.
The point that I am making is that circa 70% of the “eye watering” costs referred to in the article are claimed by most MPS. This leaves office costs, travel costs and subsistence making up the residue. The only reason SF do not claim these other expenses is because they dare not, as they dont turn up. Obvioysly you feel it is wrong for SDLP to take their salaries for going to work.
As for owning property……. don’t get me started on SF, DUP and Orange Lodge, and their real estate and business empires.
I now ask is Dr McDonnell the only MP that owns a flat in London. From the tone of the report it sounds as though he is, but somehow I bet he is not. But who cares he’s in the SDLP.
The story would not sound as good if it was simply based on Margaret Ritchie claiming £60k in office expenses and taking her wages. But who cares she’s in the SDLP.
Again I refer to lazy sensationalist commentators and journalists, but who cares if might get us on to the TV and radio at the taxpayers expense.
Instead of asking is Dr McDonnell the only one who owns a property bought with taxpayer support, go back like the writer of this piece, do your homework and present the name of the SF MP who used taxpayer funds to purchase a property, now rents it, and claims hotel expenses in the same city whilst renting the property bought with taxpayer-assistance. As Irish Republicans we’re not worried about what some Tory or Unionist MP has done: let’s not let you extend your net too wide in an effort to show Dr McDonnell snout in the trough behaviour is somehow standard.
No waffle about fictitious real estate and business empires.
Names of SF MPs please?
Sorry Eamon but i do not know of any SInn Fein MP that owns property in London or rents out property, but this is not my point.
My point is that this is a sensationalist article based on nothing more than SDLP bashing. For example why is it only the the SDLP office staff being brought into question when all MP’s claim similar office expenses.
From your comment you appear to be an Irish Republican concerned about the allocation of British taxes to the SDLP only.
As a concerned tax payer do your taxes go only to SDLP staff?
Are payments to all other parties less concerning and not worthy of a mention because you are an Irish Republican?
Again when it comes to reporting and commentating all I seek is fairness and equality.
