Have you got a credit card? If so, hug it to your bosom tightly and let nobody near it. That’ll give you the illusion of being safe. But you won’t be.
A few weeks ago we received a statement of transactions that’d been made on our credit card. Since we use it only to fill up the car with petrol and to book holidays, a number of transactions that we couldn’t have made jumped out. To the tune, in toto, of some £500 plus. Immediately I got on the phone to Mr Visa and I was assured that they’d block the card and issue me with a new one, and that I’d not be out of pocket.
Fair enough. But how did this thief get into our card in the first place? Fraud section of Mr Visa working hard on it.
Today I received a letter telling me again that my bank had plugged the gap in my credit card account by changing the card and refunding me what had been taken out. BUT. And this is the truly odd thing. But the bank was taking their refund OUT again BECAUSE THE THIEVING BASTARD who had taken the money in the first place had apparently had a change of heart and had put the money they’d take out BACK IN AGAIN.
So I ring the people who sent me the letter and make sure that the letter is saying what it appears to be saying: money had been taken out of my account by Mr Thief, the bank/card people had refunded me for my loss, the thief had then decided to put back in the money s/he had taken, so the bank had removed the money they’d given me to plug the hole in the first place.
Are you still with me? If not I perfectly understand. Anyway, I rang up and asked the nice woman at the bank/card who Mr Thief was and how had s/he got access to my money? No idea. And did thieves usually have a change of heart and put back the money they’d pilfered? Sometimes. Sometimes a person or company could have accidentally keyed in someone else’s number (i.e., mine) and then realised their horrible mistake and had redressed the error.
Do you believe that? Me neither. But then I have no idea how access to my card happened in the first place. And isn’t it odd that a thief can take money out of your account, put it back again, and yet remain anonymous? Curiouser and curiouser.
Anyway, you have been warned.
