“Little selection of portraits this week. Portrait was taken with a little mirrorless Fuji which is a great little performer. The tattoo shots were taken in available tungsten lighting  with an ISO of 10000 on a Canon 5d iii. Last week’s Washington pics were taken on a little Halina that I bought from the landlady’s catalogue when I was a student in Belfast. It was described as ‘Empire Made’ which meant Hong Kong at that time.”

I” took a trip down to my local nature reserve, Portmore Lough today, it’s best at sunrise or sunset, these photos are at sunset. I know you liked my Barn owl photos from a few weeks ago so I thought you might like these first four photos of another very rare Irish bird, female Hen harrier. She’s a juvenile hatched this summer either in the Antrim hills or the Sperrins, then came down off the hills to the rich winter hunting grounds of Portmore and Lough Neagh. If any of you fancy seeing her head to Portmore Lough about an hour before sunset and from the viewing platform beside the car park, watch across the reed beds for a large brown bird with a white rump gliding slowly over the reeds.”

Final two photos are of Whooper swans which have traveled all the way from Iceland to overwinter at Portmore, very vocal bird and well worth the trip to see them.
