The late Brian O’Nolan, alias Flann O’Brien, alias Myles na gCopaleen,
would probably translate “Aosdana” as Brazen Age but it is a body
probably modelled on the Acadamie Francaise which lately conferred the description
“SAOI” on Edna O’Brien, already honoured in Britain as a Dame of The
British Empire. Myle na gCopaleen would probably translated SAOI (pronounced “SEE”)
as “WISEGUY” or “WISEDOLL”.
Anyhow Dame Edna recently starred in a TV programme where a couple of
WiseGuys, if not Goodfellas, ,John Banville and Sir Bob Geldof, had TALK-ON
parts.
Dame Edna is in her 90th year, and however brazen she may have been is a
beautiful and seemingly healthy woman. When a young girl she was punched by her
father when he’d come home from a binge. When a young woman she was assaulted
and threatened by her husband who pocketed her earnings from her writings.
It might have been far worse had she kissed Sir Bob Geldof,
