| If my memory serves me right, Jonathan Swift once maintained that ten, (or a dozen?) men, well-armed could subdue a man in his nightshirt. Another Dubliner, a couple of centuries later, maintained that as the Black Shirts had come to power in Italy, and the Hitler-Shirts (sic),had com to power in Germany, so, assuredly would the Blue Shirts in the Irish Free State. The prophetic accuracy there might depend on definitions which I’d leave to Pedants. But Swift’s assertion was proven within a few month’s of John A Costello’s boast, in Munich, when Ernst Rohm, leader of the Brown Shirts (or “Hitler Shirts” ) was surprised in his nightshirt,by a band of well-armed men led by Herr Hitler himself, who murdered him. Fine Gael was not the only party to ape Italy’s Blackshirts .. According to the historian Eric Hobsbawm, who, as a teenage Left-Winger got out of Germany ahead of the Nazi snatch-squads, the Zionist Likud Party was modelled on Mussolini’s Black Shirts. The late Eric Hobsbawm, was Jewish. |
