With a self-satisfied smile on his face, one Jonathan Sumption, in THE SUNDAY TIMES (17 May) pleads -“Set us free, ministers, and stop covering your backs.” He follows with the assertion that “free people make mistakes and willingly take risks.”
But he himself is retired, on an adequate pension and free as a bird. Most of his fellow citizens are not free, and are under strong pressure from the strongest, (and wealthiest) employers to return to work at the risk of their own lives, together with those of their colleagues and their families.
THE SUNDAY TIMES, in the very same issue,.tells us of the recent General Election – “IT WAS THE RICH WOT WON IT.”
It supports that claim by telling us that of the richest 160 on their Rich List, only 5 donated money to Labour, to a total of £96,750 “barely enough for half a table at the type of party fundraiser for which the Tories are famed.”
It continues “they (The Tories) have the monetising of the Rich List bedrock down to a fine art, offering a tiered donor structure from the Fastrack club (annual
membership £300) to the Leader’s Group (annual membership £50,000). Tory fundraiser auctions routinely offer Rich Lister trinkets such as a week for 24 at former Tory co-treasurer Lord Lupton’s Mallorcan villa. ANYONE?
Jonathan Sumption’s assumption that everyone is free to dine at the Ritz, echoes Pangloss in Voltaire’s Candide. It is hard to credit such naivete in a former UK Supreme Court Judge and a recent BBC Reith lecturer.
