First, a prediction: Dominic Cummings will not be removed from his position of vast influence in No 10 Downing Street.
The facts seem clear. Boris Johnson’s right-hand-man drove 260 miles from his home in London, all the way to his parents’ place in Durham. This happened last March, when the coronavirus was raging in England.
According to the testimony of several people, including a former Chief Constable, Cummings didn’t stay in the house during his time in Durham. What’s more, having returned to his home in London, he made a second trip north.
The Labour leader Keith Starmer says it’s an insult to sacrifices made by British people in similar circumstances. Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeo says she thinks Cummings should step down, as her chief medical officer did after it was found she’d visited her second home. The Lib Dem’s acting leader Ed Davey says Johnson should sack Cummings. And a number of Conservative MPs have said he should resign.
Boris Johnson, however, thinks otherwise: “I believe that in every respect he [Cummings] has acted responsibly, and legally and with integrity and with the overwhelming aim of stopping the spread of this virus and saving lives.”
And Cummings himself? “Who cares what looks good? It’s a question of doing the right thing, it’s not about what you guys [the media] think”.
Johnson himself was sacked from the Daily Telegraph for lying. Now that Johnson holds the reins of power, Cummings can do or say what he likes. As can Johnson.
