A few evenings ago the BBC screened the story of the coup which deposed the elected Prime Minister of IRAN in 1953.
It was brutal ,and while it was accomplished by the Americans under Eisenhower and the Dulles brothers, John Foster Dulles, Secretary of State, and Allen Dulles head of the CIA, during Chuchill’s last Government, the plans had been prepared by the British Government of Clement Attlee during the reign of King George VI.
IT was a vile, murderous business involving British Diplomats; or Military Intelligence Officers with Diplomatic Status when Truman was US President.
Those of you who read my BLOG – “A Sweet Deal – the Indonesian Holocaust of 1965 and its Sponsors” (May 25) may have thought that Sir Andrew Gilchrist, who as Ambassador in Jakarta in 1965, orchestrated the propaganda and the coup in Indonesia ,was a uniquely evil Diplomat, as I myself thought, would, if you had watched he programme on Iran,have learned better.
Britain’s Diplomatic Corps has always included the hardest-nosed diplomats and hard-knuckled thugs that have ever been whelped, and the CIA are their dedicated pupils.
It was interesting to see the Pathe Newsreel of the Coup, and its description of the ousted popular Prime Minister Dr Mohammad Mossadegh as a Dictator.
Back in 1920 Pathe produced a Newsreel, purporting to show an ambush in Kerry. Dubliners recoginsed the Vico Road in Dalkey, more than 200 miles awat from Kerry. Pathe were acting with Captain Hugh Pollard of Dublin Castle’s Black Propaganda Unit.
Pollard later flew Francisco Franco from the Canaries to Morocco, and when Franco took Madrid he was installed as MI6’s man in the British Embassy.
Stills from the bum Newsreel are frequently shown in the IRISH TIMES, which is governed by a secretive oathbound trust established following a joint initiative of MI6 Agent Tom MacDowall and Sir Andrew Gilchrist.
