UNHOLY WAR- MEMORIALS IN ST PATRICK’S (ANGLICAN CATHEDRAL) by Donal Kennedy

Living In England I have visited many beautiful and beautifully kept Anglican Churches and Cathedrals predating the “Reformation”and been welcomed by informed and friendly guideThe memorials and graves of generals and admirals from landed families who benefitted from the suppression of the monasteries, dispossession of English peasants, the murder, pillage and genocide on all continents is something I note but don’t remark on, for politeness’s sake.

The average English person’s knowledge of history – Irish, international, or indeed English – might have been been gathered from graffitti written in excrement  on a bog wall in the Bull in Ambridge.

I’ve just come back from a couple of days in Norfolk. We crossed from Suffolk, close to  Thetford, the birthplace of my favourite English hero – Tom Paine. But he is not honoured in his native county – which boasts at its borders of being the county of Nelson.
