Frosty Accusations by Michael Lagan

The EU are to blame for the mess that is Brexit and by extension the NI Protocol…or so Lord Frost, the new Brexit Secretary claims, and I’d hazard a guess there are many English nationalists who agree with him.

Something tells me Michael Gove was being too easy on the EU, too friendly some might say, but is that really the case? Or was Michael Gove simply being the friendly relationship that the UK needed to retain a semblance of trust within the EU which may have in turn borne fruit in future EU/UK negotiations on….oh I don’t know – the NI Protocol?

There was a lot of talk from the UK government about retaining the closest possible links and relationships with their closest neighbour – namely Ireland; but those close relationships had no part in Boris Johnson’s decision to break international law by unilaterally making decisions which have led to legal action by the EU once again.

Had Boris Johnson taken the time and shown the respect he likes to speak of to his closest neighbour, Ireland, he would have learned that Irish MEPs were lobbying on the UK’s behalf for an extension to the grace period on goods and services, and relaxation of regulations which were said to have been close to being agreed.

The British still seem to forget that it was the UK which left the EU.  The EU did not leave the UK and in that context the EU had no responsibility to negotiate anything.  When Lord Frost claims the EU is to blame for the mess known as Brexit, he fails to account for the fact the UK squandered months of crucial negotiations based on a hope that Donald Trump would be re-elected as President to grant them the “Deal of the Century”, and that more than once the UK walked away from the table because the EU weren’t willing to undermine their market for one country that wanted to leave.

No, the UK have bungled Brexit, through their own ego, in that they imagined they were worth more than all the countries in the EU.  They thought they would strong-arm the EU into a deal that would work only for the UK, and in that they have been out-manoeuvred.  Michael Gove is the best thing to happen to the UK in the context of Brexit.  He is attempting to maintain a respectful and amiable relationship with Maros Sefcovic and the main players in the EU in general – something Lord Frost seems to be attempting to reverse.
