THE DAILY MAIL, THE IRISH TIMES,AND THEIR FRIENDS. by Donal Kennedy

.

The DAILY MAIL since its inception in 1896 has been a consistent champion of tyranny. In 1965 I had a conducted tour of its Fleet Street  premises and was shown a copy of its edition dated 31 December 1899.

It was a celebration of a century of British Imperial expansion by foul means and fouller still, and the glorification of the long reign of Queen Victoria which had pushed drugs on China at gunpoint in 1840, attacked Afghanistan and imposed genocidal starvation in Ireland shortly afterwards and was at the time engaged in a thuggish campaign against the Boers. It must be conceded that many Irishmen served in the Imperial forces, but were not generally regarded as folk heroes back home. For instance, GAA clubs were being named after Boer heroes.

Mussolini, Hitler and Franco were much admired by conservative Britons. Mussolini was bankrolled by British Intelligence from 1915 and King George V dubbed him a Knight of the Bath in 1923 after he had had a Socialist MP murdered. Mussolini, like many later reactionaries, was a

former leading Socialist. The DAILY MAIL was a strident supporter of Hitler up to Britain’s declaration of war in 1939, and Mussolini’s praise of the paper was proudly published in it. Churchill praised Mussolini’s rape of Abyssinia and even had words of praise for Hitler as late as 1938.

The DAILY MAIL is a devilishly clever paper which knows its readership is generally  ignorant of history Thus the recent story of “Chips” Channon’s canoodling with Hitler and Goering at the Olympic Games in 1936 was calculated to shock them.

Channon, an American whose family made a fortune in shipping on the great lakes, renounced America and embraced, spiritually and carnally, titled and royal Europeans, of either gender, married a Guinness heiress, became a Conservative MP and Secretary to RAB Butler, and kept a diary. He was a snob and social climber of the most contemptible kind and thought Hitler might restore monarchy in Germany.

On his death his son Paul succeeded him as MP for Southend. He served as a Minister in Margaret Thatcher’s Cabinets.

THE IRISH TIMES has recently expressing Shock and Horror that Irishmen helped create and maintain the British Empire. The paper is wholly run by the oathbound and secretive IRISH TIMES TRUST set up by the crooked Lord Goodman, Harold Wilson’s favourite “fixer” at the instigation of a British Ambassador in Dublin. For most of its 164 years the paper has been staunchly British Imperialist – more so in 1921, for instance, than even THE TIMES of London.

In February 1933 THE IRISH TIMES had an Editorial warning of the dire consequences of returning De Valera and Fianna Fail to power. They had been in power with support from Labour for a year, De Valera and Fianna Fail continued in power election after election

In March 1933 THE IRISH TIMES in an Editorial welcomed Hitler’s accession to power because of the short and shrift his party gave to Communists and Socialists.

The paper frequently reproduces stills from a fake 1920 newsreel made by Pathe News purporting to show an encounter near Tralee between Crown Forces and the IRA

The former British Intelligence agent, Robert Kee, reproduced  the images in his GREEN FLAG trilogy on Irish History, Which is fitting, for Pathe News was acting in cahoots with British Captain Hugh Pollard of the Black Propaganda unit in Dublin Castle.

When the news reel was screened in Dublin it drew hoots of laughter from the viewers because they recognised Dublin’ Vico Road on Killiney Bay, 200 odd miles from Tralee.

Hugh Pollard gave further sterling service to the British Empire by promoting Fascism. He piloted a small plane to the Canaries and picked up a Spanish officer who had been posted there by the Republican Government to keep him out of mischief. He then flew the officer, Francisco Franco, to Spanish Morocco whence the mutinous traitor launched a murderous war on his people. When, three years later, Franco entered Madrid MI6 Agent Hugh Pollard served in the British Embassy there.

Graham Greene was also a British Agent in Spain. He presented later as an anti-fascist but it has recently been suggested that that was a pose and that he was a useful  tool of the fascists. Spooks and crooks can be synonymous.

Greene was a convert to Catholicism. Pollard who was a rabidly anti-Irish racist was also a Catholic.
