The good Lord Ken Maginnis and his letter to the IT

This morning The Irish Times finds room for a very long letter from Ken Maginnis, aka Lord Maginnis of Drumglass. In it he laments the state of politics in our NE stateen.  “They [the public] want our leaders to behave like responsible adults and not petulant youngsters…Angry words, whether they are over the Northern Ireland protocol, Covid regulations, attendance at funerals or lockdown rules, pollute the political atmosphere”.

In 2013, Ken Maginnis was found guilty of assault during a ‘road rage’ incident the previous  year. Dungannon Magistrates Court fined him £200 and the same amount by way of compensation to Keith Kirk, whom Maginnis admitted he called “ a yellow-bellied bastard”.

In 2020, the BBC News website reported the good Lord  was suspended for 18 months from the House of Lords over bullying and harassment claims. It seems he broke conduct rules toward four people in Westminster, and that he used “homophobic and offensive” language.

Sometimes letter-writers to newspapers are accused of not knowing what they’re talking about. It seems safe to say that the good Lord has personal experience of people who act like petulant youngsters rather than responsible adults.
