Article 28.
3.1 War shall not be declared and the State shall not participate in any war save with the assent of Dail Eireann.
3.2. In the case of actual invasion, however, the Government may take whatever steps they may consider necessary for the protection of the State, and Dail Eireann, if not sitting shall be summoned to met at the earliest possible date.
I’m no lawyer but a reasonably informed citizen and it seems to me that the Irish Government and Dail Eireann have lost the plot.
It was revealed recently that armed British Air Force planes have been patrolling Irish airspace with the connivance of, or at the
invitation of the Irish Government, these past twenty years and that the Irish Defence Forces, including the Army Air Corps, has
been kept in dark about the Faustian Bargain. The establishment of Irish Sovereignty with the enactment of the Constitution quoted was bought by blood, toil, tears and sweat over many centuries and the tenacity of its author.
Dealing with International Relations
Article 29
1 Ireland affirms its devotion to the ideal of peace and friendly co-operation amongst nations founded on international justice and morality.
The articles quoted were enacted with the rest of the Constitution by the voters by plebiscite in 1937.
They seem reasonable to me. The various political parties in Ireland today are not unanimous in supporting them. And few, if any of the nations which are seen by some Irish opinion formers as suitable partners for our Defence Forces, followed them in 1937 or the 84 years since.
