Unless it was a sovereign democracy of equal citizens with rights and responsibilities BUT NO PRIVILEGES, a reunited Ireland would have no attractions for me.
No places in parliament or local authorities would be reserved for Catholics, Protestants, Atheists, LGBT lobbyists and no candidates should be excluded for their opinions. Elections should be based on the PR single transferable vote so that no sect or section could complain of unfairness,
No citizens should hold Knighthoods or Peerages and no public representatives should be allowed membership of secret or secretive societies such as the Freemasons or Opus Dei. No citizen should be allowed to enlist in the armed forces or serve in the secret services of foreign states. In this case Foreign includes any state other than Ireland.
All armed forces in Ireland should be under control of Ireland’s Parliament. Irish forces should not serve abroad except under the terms of the United Nations Charter and in accordance with the will of the Irish Parliament.
Ireland should not have secret agreements with othe states or governments.
I realise that my ideas clash with the anti-democratic ideas embraced by the late Seamus Mallon. with those of Leo Varadkar and swathes of Fine Gael, of Micheal Martin and (God save us all!) other members of today’s Fianna Fail, and the bought ventriloquists’ dummies of John Bull in Ireland.
So be it. I’ve contributed my tuppence worth and I refuse to be outbid to change it.
