You may have noticed that I’m an old-fashioned guy. I’ve just used an old-fashioned word – “IRELAND”, today virtually banned from polite society.
But if I’m an old stick-in-the-mud I’m in good company – The Church of Ireland, the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, the Methodist Church in Ireland, the Religious Society of Friends in Ireland, as well as the Jewish Congregations and other reputable bodies of citizens.
I live in England, a country world-famous for modesty and self-effacement, not to mention Great British understatement. The word ENGLAND has never, to my knowledge, been banned from print or other media. But perhaps I’m wrong.
I’m addressing myself to people living in Ireland.
Should you wish to live in an island where every person has rights and every person has responsibilities and no person has privileges?
An egalitarian society, where nobody threatens their neighbours or burns them either in their skins or in effigy?
A society where nobody holds a Knighthood, a Peerage or other source of unmerited income or influence? A society where debate is free, justice is impartial, and newspapers and other media are owned and controlled by citizens owning no allegiance to powers or paymasters outside Ireland? All media to be held responsible for their conduct and subject to penalties for misuse of their powers?
It seems to me that a continuation of current trends would make my island Sireland a shelter for despots and slaves.
