Did you ever have one of those nightmares where you’re trying to run from something but your legs just don’t seem to work, and the more you struggle the more you’re rooted into the same spot, and all the time Something is closing in on you?
I would imagine that’s how detainees in Guantanamo Bay feel. We’ve all seen them on the news, as they pass through Shannon (to our shame) and as they stumble about in orange suits in Guantanamo. These are men who have been flown half-way round the world so they can be tortured into confessing crimes that, in many instances, they know nothing about.
But the American authorities don’t care. George Bush didn’t care. Barack Obama didn’t care. And Joe Biden wouldn’t appear to care.
So the question is this: if you were inside one of those orange jump-suits, if you didn’t know the right answer when they tortured you, what view of American justice would you develop? And if you ever got out of that place, would you meekly keep your head down and obey, or demand that your feelings of resentment be given a voice of violent response?
Read this article, sent to me by a friend. Because one thing’s sure. No newspaper today in the Western world, will bother reporting Guantanamo Bay. Which is why its inmates are completely at the mercy of an angry, cruel country.
