LETTERS FOR IRISH EDITORS, LEGISLATORS AND PUBLIC GURUS – by Donal Kennedy

Am I wrong in thinking that western correspondents reporting from the Ukrainian capital appear to be cocooned in physical  and narrative comfort zones?

So far none of the Western Correspondents I have seen on television  has shown signs of bodily discomfort. They are smartly dressed and apparently well fed and watered.

None appears to have suffered shock or trauma from what they have witnessed. They have no facial tics, their hands are steady, and their speech flows fluently.

They apparently are free of curiosity and to have no awareness of the origins of the troubles which have afforded them a break from Brexit Britain and Covid-hit Ireland.

One might think, with the time and expenses at their disposal that they might have interviewed people with conflicting views of the rights and wrongs of the quarrel and then sought evidence to support or dispute those narratives.

But it seems they are expected or paid to supply anti- Russian propaganda  and personal attacks on President Putin.

There has been much braggadocio about fighting to the last man, woman and child from braggarts who would have us believe that the willingness to have their nation exterminated is a condition required of a patriot.

And no self-declared friend of the anti-Russian “patriots” has poured cold water on such moronic codswallop or derided such codswallop.

The Irish  media and the Oireachtas, God help us!,  have funked an analysis of the origins of the quarrel or suggested how it can be peaceably resolved.

Our Constitution, enacted by our own citizens in 1937*, commits us as a nation to work for the peaceful  and just resolution of international disputes.

Unlike Britain, France, Italy and Japan, we have a long and  honourable record from the days of the League of Nations in seeking implementation of its Charter, through the days of the United Nations when Frank Aiken saw his pet project, the Nuclear Non- Proliferation

Treaty come into force in 1970. It was renewed in 1995 and in 2016 had been endorsed by 191 States. North Korea had endorsed it in 1985 and repudiated it in 2003, but It has helped to keep us all safe from annihilation these past 52 years.

But Ukraine under its present regime has made clear that it wants nuclear weapons, and it appears the United States is intent in pushing them on Japan, but this time not out of B29s.. I suppose the Japanese this time will thank Uncle Sam for Small Mercies?

It seems that these days an atom bomb could be carried in a suitcase. Capitalism being what it is, I expect they’ll be offered on E-Bay before long.

President Putin’s concerns should be shared by many of his fellow human beings, irrespective of nation or politics.

Blowing raspberries at President Putin, and kissing President Biden’s and Boris Johnson’s extremities may be self-satisfying diversions diversions for our opinion -formers.

But is an abuse which might not only result in themselves  going blind , but risks blowing the daylights  out of all life on earth.

During the Second World War the UK did not accept Irish sovereignty nor did the United States. Today they both are champions of Ukraine’s less-than-immaculate regime,

*The IRISH CONSTITUTION enacted by the plain people in 1937 is the only one that has been wholly our own. THE FREE STATE CONSTITUTION, most of which was drafted for Michael Collins, contained a denial of Irish Sovereignty, dictated by Winston Churchill.
