WHATEVER HAPPENED TO LIEUTENANT COLONEL OWEN McNALLY? – by Donal Kennedy

The British officer was arrested by Ministry of Defence police in Afghanistan 13 years ago and flown to London for questioning by the Metropolitan Police on suspicion of a breach of The Official Secrets Act, for which he might have been sent to prison for fourteen years.

The allegation against the officer was that he had supplied sensitive information to a (female) Human Rights campaigner about civilians killed by NATO forces.

His behaviour was said to have angered an American General.

British media had reports that the officer was having an affair with the woman and the Ministry of Defence denied that it was the source of the story,

The woman, Rachel Reid, is a former BBC journalist and had no romantic involvement with the Colonel.

The nub of the affair was that the number of civilian fatalities directly inflicted by NATO forces was many times that given by those forces and the governments which had sent them to Afghanistan.

I do not think that Scotland Yard ever revealed the results of their interrogation, or that Ms. Reid was compensated by those who libelled her.

The facts have been lost in the fog of yet another propaganda war.
